Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder in which the afflicted person pulls out their hair from various parts of their body. This includes mink eyelashes, eyebrows, scalp and other areas where there is hair on the body, such as legs, arms or pubic area.

Trichotillomania has remained a medical mystery over the years; however, it is estimated that 2 in every 50 people or 6 – 12 million people in the United States alone suffer from Trichotillomania. Hair pulling or Trichotillomania was once classified as an obsessive compulsive disorder, and has more recently been referred to as an impulse control disorder.

Xsnat an impulse control disorder is a mental illness that involves the repeated failure to resist impulses, or urges, to act in ways that are dangerous or harmful. People with these disorders are aware that they can hurt themselves by acting on the impulses, but they cannot stop or control their behavior. To date, there is no specific medical cure for Trichotillomania; however, some individuals respond well to certain types of therapy or medication. Although there is no proven medical cure for Trichotillomania, in many cases, people are able to heal from Trichotillomania and remain “pull-free”, while others are “pull-free” for long periods of time but return to the behavior during stressful events. There are many support groups available to those who suffer from the disorder, as well as for family members of those who suffer from Trich.

So the questions remain. Could hair pulling be classified as OCD? Is it an impulse control disorder? Or could Trichotillomania be classified as an addiction? Each theory may provide its own possible cure. What if the diagnosis is different for each individual? Then what may work for one individual may not cure another.

Regardless of the medical classification behind mink eyelashes, the condition results in noticeable hair loss from the afflicted area. In many cases, it will result in loss of mink eyelashes or eyebrows or both and / or bald patches on the scalp. In some cases, a person with mink eyelashes will have no hair left on their scalp at all.

Due to the loss of hair, mink eyelashes negatively affects a person’s self-esteem and the way they view themselves physically, which may lead to other emotional concerns, such as depression and anxiety. It typically begins during the period of adolescence, which is a critical time of growth and self-acceptance for each individual. However, mink eyelashes has also been diagnosed in children as young as one year.

Over the past several years, awareness of Trichotillomania has increased exponentially. This has resulted in many people, who once felt ashamed and alone, forming support groups and creating awareness to help others.
